Tragic Accident in Karachi: Water Tanker Kills Pregnant Woman, Husband, and Newborn

A young couple died on March 24, 2025, after a water tanker ran into their motorcycle on Karachi’s Sharea Faisal. Abdul Qayyum, 25, was taking his pregnant wife, Zainab, 19, to the hospital when the accident happened.

According to Deputy Inspector General of Police Pir Mohammed Shah, the water tanker’s brakes failed as it came down Sharea Faisal from Model Colony, causing the truck to break through barriers, cross over to the wrong side of the road, and hit the couple’s bike. Abdul Qayyum and Zainab died right away.

Painfully, Zainab delivered her baby after the accident. The infant could not be saved despite the attempts. Dr. Summaiya Syed stated the mother had serious injuries, but the newborn had no visible injuries.

Witnesses said the water truck was speeding from the Malir Halt bridge before it crashed into the motorcycle. The driver and assistant were caught by people and taken to police. The vehicle has been detained as investigations commence.

Accidents Must Be Stop: Who is responsible.

Many people reacted angrily after this accident. Recently, there have been many deaths because of heavy trucks in Karachi. In the first 83 days of 2025, heavy trucks killed 68 people. Activists and residents want tougher enforcement of traffic laws, better maintenance for trucks, and better training for drivers so that such accidents do not happen again.

The incident was caused by several factors:

  • The driver did not check the brakes and thus failed to ensure vehicle safety before driving.
  • The company did not maintain the brakes properly; thus, they failed to work.
  • Regulators failed to enforce safety standards for heavy vehicles.

We must address these issues to make roads safe and avoid more deaths in Karachi.
