Punjab Introduces Upgraded Criteria System for Matric and Inter Exams

The Punjab Board Committee of Chairmen (PBCC) formalized a 10-point grading system that passed Matric and Inter with such major changes to the Grade Point Average (GPA) concept.

Except for normal schooling, which will include the subjects “hardly” and “very” in the level of failure, most students will be given marks based on A++ to the worst E. To ensure students’ safety, “Fail” has been replaced by “Unsatisfactory”.

Besides, the minimum passing marks have been boosted from 33% to 40%, which is a goal to raise academic standards in the whole province.

Matric and Inter New Criteria Of Education

The transformation will be conducted in two parts:

Phase One (2026): Students’ grading will be graded.

Phase Two (2027): The school system of assessment through marks will be extended to grades 10 and 12.

This move is in complete coordination with the government’s broader policy of standardization of assessment measures, as observed by the Inter Board Coordination Commission’s (IBCC) recent setup of a 10-point grading scale for the secondary and higher secondary education sector.

Some experts across the board think this switch of grades will help teachers and students to remember different qualities and abilities of subjects instead of absorbing them to rehearse things that they have already told. The PBCC is not only willing to guide teachers with continuous professional development to keep them up-to-date with the techniques and methods.

It is suggested for key players, both the stakeholders truly advise the teachers, students, and parents to become fully familiar with the new means of the grading system to avoid being caught off guard due to the changes in the structure of the new grading system.
