Pakistan Shuts Airspace, Suspends Trade with India, and Warns Water Diversion as ‘Act of War’

April 24, 2025 – Islamabad: “Act of War”, Pakistan has taken serious measures by shutting down the airspace for Indian aircraft, imposing a complete ban on trade, and then declaring to Indian authorities that they own the water from the Indus River and if India were to try and draw water from the river system, it would be an “act of war.”

Pakistan Declares New Decision ‘Act of War’

The decision came after the National Security Committee (NSC) session (NSC), during which the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) by India was the issue that the Committee was discussing. The latter was triggered by the killing of 26 people in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, due to an attack, and their signing was the main reason for the meeting.

The National Security Committee (NSC) of Pakistan termed any interference in the waters assigned to Pakistan under the IWT that leads to the waters stopping or changing their route an act of war. The NSC concluded that full force will be used in pursuing this.

The IWT from the year 1960 signed by the World Bank regulates the distribution of the Indus River and its tributaries between India and Pakistan. It is important to note that according to the Pakistani government, the treaty is an international agreement that is legally binding and cannot be terminated by just one party.

The south-eastern neighbor of India, besides blocking Indian airspace and cutting the ties with its northern neighbor, has also shut down the Wagah borders, stopped the crossing, invalidated the Indian visas, and given Indian citizens an ultimatum of 48 hours to leave the country.

The latest POW developments have resulted in the possibility that an armed clash, with the use of nuclear weapons, could take place between India and Pakistan. International groups are hoping that sounder voices will prevail, and both countries will engage in dialogues to reduce tensions.
