Education Department Raises Minimum Passing Marks for Matric and Inter Students

Published: May 8, 2025: To enhance academic standards, it is an important move. For Matriculation (Class 10) and Intermediate (Class 12) examinations, Pakistan’s Inter Boards Coordination Commission (IBCC) has officially increased the passing marks percentage from 33% to 40%. From the 2025 academic season, this change will be implemented all over Pakistan.

During a recent IBCC meeting, this decision was officially finalized; all educational boards’ members attended this meeting and followed this decision, purpose of promoting a more severe valuation outline. To support this change or to follow the new decision, the grace marks policy has been revised by IBCC, increasing up to 5 grace marks in each subject, an increase from the preceding three. Though a maximum of two subjects, these grace marks can only be applied; students who fail in more than two subjects will not be qualified for this concern.

Additionally, A new 10-point grading system has been introduced by IBCC  to replace the traditional 7-point scale. This updated system includes the above to U (Unsatisfactory), for scores below 40%, grades ranging from A++ (Exceptional) for scores of 95% and above. The grading improvement is designed to lessen the concentrated competition for top marks and provide a more comprehensive assessment of student performance.

Across the country, the IBCC also plans to standardize examination schedules. Starting in 2025, Matric exams will be held in March, In April, Intermediate exams will be followed, In June and July result will be announced, correspondingly. These are suitable schedule goals to modernize academic calendars to ease timely admissions to higher education institutions.

These comprehensive reforms reflect the IBCC’s commitment to refining educational excellence and guaranteeing reliability across Pakistan’s examination systems.
