Islamabad, April 16, 2025 – A surprise, unexpected hailstorm struck the city of Islamabad on Wednesday afternoon and destroyed hundreds of vehicles from all parts of the city. It was a thirty-five-minute-long storm that took a short time to bring heavy monsoon accompanied by large hailstones, some as large as golf balls, that residents were not ready to face.

The most severe destruction, however, was impacted areas like Tarnol, G-13, G-15, and some parts of Rawalpindi, where open-space parking vehicles got their windshields broken, windows broke into pieces, and vehicle bodies got deep dents. The impact of the destruction was so severe that social media was busy with videos and photos from residents who showed their cars, which the victims of the attack.
Some of the main roads found the traffic block as the drivers sheltered to get underneath the flyovers and petrol stations, as the nearest shelters. At the same time, trees were felled, power lines were broken, and water had nowhere to go, which made the flooding mechanism of the rain even more devastating, and the situation even worse.
The weather experts at the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had expected rain and thunder to reach the area, but nobody had foreseen the intensity of the hailstorm. The officials described the quick change of weather as the movement of a strong weather system that broke out in upper Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
There were also teams from the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the emergency services that were working together to help the people affected and to clean the remains. At the moment, no deaths have been reported, even though a couple of people got injured, but only slightly, as a result of the accident and broken glass falling.
Finding no signs of improvement for the next couple of days in the region, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has come forward with a pressing weather alert and advised the people not to go out and to be cautious at their homes if a weather emergency occurs.
This occurrence has given a chance to focus on climate change and the increasing frequency of extreme weather disasters in the local area. Professionals are asking for the reorganization of urban planning, the construction of infrastructure, and informing the public in time to prevent any future losses. People are advised to comply with the official notifications and stay aware of hidden dangers during the weather.
