Models are too fat controversy, In the company’s ad campaigns, clothing brand Snag has taken a big and bold step in fashion industry by incorporating different body shapes. However, after this the brand of company receiving over 100 complaints daily from people accusing the company of using “too fat’ models.
Complaints For Models Are Too Fat
Snag is famous for their large size range of 4 to 38 and employs over 100 workers. To lessen the damage of the negative comments the company has allocated 12 staff members to monitor and respond to the hateful comments on social media. Snag is committed to building a body positive image by trying to make all customers feel comfortable.
The matter of body representation in fashion is not exclusive to Snag. The advertising standards authority like so many other companies has as stopping point all complaints being associated with models looking like they are starving. Take for example this Next advert where the model was critized for being too thin.
Addressing Fat phobia
Brigitte Read, the founder of Snag, has spoken about the fight against fatphobia in the fashion industry. Read explains that making assumptions about people’s health based on their size is not helpful, and rather, it mentally and physically harms people. “Fat people exist, they’re equally as valid as thin people, they buy clothes and they need to see what they look like on people that look like them,” said Read, stating the importance of showcasing models of all sizes.
A Call for Representation
The fashion industry has been overly evaluated for its promotion of extreme thinness, and its narrow representation of beauty. Many people in society have been disconnected from the market because their body images are not represented. While some designers do accept size diversity, there is more work to be done. The conversation of body image within fashion has been strained further by the popularization of weight-loss medicines.
Snag’s experience exemplifies the fight between classic beauty standards and the call for inclusion and diversity. By aggressively marketing and showcasing a wide range of figures, Snag undermines inherent prejudices within the industry, and works towards the development of an all-encompassing and complicated fashion industry.
While these changes take place, the world is changing, therefore, the fashion industry also needs to change so that everyone is included, no matter the size.
