The National Highway Authority (NHA) implemented its second tax hike on national Motorway and Highway within the last three months. The expected gain from the implementation of the new rates effective April 1, 2025, is considerable revenue for road maintenance and road safety infrastructure.

According to the announcement of the National Highway Authority, the new transportation charges on the national highways are as follows: cars are charged at Rs70, vans at Rs150, and buses at Rs250. Two-wheel and three-wheel trucks will have to pay Rs300 while multimodal trucks will be charged Rs550.

Applied Rates On Motorway and Highway

Significant rates are applied on motorway and highways:

  • M1 Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway : Rs500 to Rs550 for car
  • M3 Lahore-Abdul Hakeem Motorway: The fees have increased from Rs700 to Rs800 for cars.
  • M4 Pindi Bhattian-Faisalabad-Multan Motorway: Car tolls also have climbed to Rs1,050 from Rs950.
  • M5 Multan-Sukkur Motorway: The rate for cars has been subject to change to Rs1,200 from Rs1,100.
  • M14 Dera Ismail Khan-Hakla Motorway: Car tolls have now been increased to Rs650 from the previous Rs600 charge.
  • E35 Hasan Abdal-Havelian-Mansehra Expressway: The toll for cars is now Rs300 from the previous Rs250.

In the meantime, the heavy vehicle toll continues to vary on these routes from Rs850 to Rs5,750, on vehicle type and the route.

This adjustment represents the fourth toll revision of the fiscal year. The most recent increase took place on January 1, 2025. It has become an issue for the commuters and the transporters of the frequent toll hikes that have put the already financial burden of transportation at further risk. According to them, the increased costs are far outstripping the possibilities of the travelers to recover and meet other expenses that are caused by the fuel costs.

The NLCA insists that these changes are crucial to be able to finance the implementation of the road infrastructure improvement and development schemes in the country. Despite this, the sponsors are persuasive to the management to guarantee that the added revenues are translated into visible better road quality and driving safety, The application of the new rates is already being implemented, and therefore, driving people are advised to manage their travel expenses and receive notifications on any further changes in the toll policy.
