Sugar Price Fixed at Rs165 Per Kg After Deal With Sugar Industry

Islamabad: The government and the sugar industry have finally reached an agreement. The ex-mill price of sugar has been fixed at Rs165 per kilogram, as Reported By Save Our Pak News Channel on Tuesday.

This is a major development after the recent sugar crisis in the country. According to the Ministry of National Food Security, talks were held with sugar mills, and it was agreed that sugar would now be sold at Rs165 per kg from mills. All provincial governments will make sure that cheaper sugar is available in the markets.

A few days ago, former Principal Secretary Fawad Hassan Fawad raised questions about the government’s decision to first allow the export of sugar worth $300 million and now plan to import it again.

Fawad Hassan Fawad wrote on social media platform X that importing sugar worth $300 million is not in the public interest and should be reviewed immediately. He added that ordinary people do not consume as much sugar; the main benefit of this decision will go to the food and beverage industry.

He further said, “First, you allowed the export of sugar, and now you want to import it to help industrialists? The per-person sugar consumption is only 28 kg per year. The real problem is the role of the sugar mafia.”

The former Principal Secretary also stated that the government’s failure to control prices cannot be an excuse to import sugar. “Common people cannot afford expensive drinks or sweets, so why import sugar in their name?” he questioned.
