Tandoor owners throughout Pakistan have sent a clear message to raise the price of naan and roti due to a great increase in flour costs. The Naanbai Association has reported that the price of a 79kg sack of red flour has gone up from Rs 5,250 to Rs 5,750, and transport costs add to it to Rs 5,850. Similarly, the price of white fine flour has increased from Rs 6,400 to Rs 6,700.
Following up on these increased costs, the association has called for a review of the official prices of naan and roti. At the moment, the government has stipulated tandoori roti at Rs 15 and naan at Rs 25. However, Tandoor owners say that such rates pose an untenable cost in the high cost of operation.
The scenario has created a problem between tandoor owners and local administrations. In Lahore, for example, the district administration fined 433 shops and tandoor owners a total of Rs.750,000/ for not keeping the prices as announced by the government. In addition, 72 cases were recorded against the violators.
The Naanbai Association has warned that they will go ahead to hike their prices of Naan and roti next week if their demands are not met. A meeting by the Price Control Committee has been called because of this.
This approaching price increase raises concerns among consumers, as naan and roti are staple foods in Pakistan, particularly for low-income households. The government is faced with a dilemma when it comes to balancing the economic stresses of tandoor owners and the need to keep essential food items affordable for the masses.
