After heavy rains in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, the government has decided to immediately move people living close to rivers for their safety. This decision was made due to the emergency situation caused by the weather.
Prime Minister of AJK, Anwarul Haq, chaired an emergency meeting at the SDMA control room. In the meeting, it was decided that people living within 35 feet of riverbanks will be moved to safer places without delay.
The Prime Minister ordered that citizens affected by recent rains should receive their compensation payments immediately. He also instructed to strengthen monitoring for possible flash floods and the threat of water aggression from India.
Anwarul Haq specifically directed urgent action in Hattian city to deal with the rising water level of the Jhelum River.
The meeting also decided to provide temporary housing for people whose homes were destroyed by flash floods. The Prime Minister told district officials to give compensation cheques to victims within 24 hours and to quickly check electricity damage in Jhelum, Neelum, and Bagh.
He asked the Secretary of Electricity to prepare a full damage report and ordered the setting up of an emergency checkpoint in Muzaffarabad for monitoring water resources.
For public health, the meeting decided to launch an effective health campaign. Anwarul Haq also announced an operation to remove illegal structures near rivers.
He instructed rescue teams to help tourists stuck in Neelum and to speed up work in areas cut off by the floods.
Finally, the meeting decided to run an awareness campaign telling people to boil water before drinking it, protect water reserves, and immediately test water from natural springs.
