Washington (December 19, 2025): The Trump administration has announced the suspension of the US Green Card Lottery, officially known as the Diversity Visa Program.
On the instructions of President Donald Trump, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that the Diversity Visa Program has been stopped with immediate effect. She said that the decision applies to people planning to enter the United States through the green card lottery system.
Kristi Noem explained that this move was taken after recent shooting incidents at Brown University and MIT. She stated that the suspect involved in the Brown University shooting had entered the United States in 2017 through the Green Card Lottery program.
According to the Homeland Security Secretary, the individual should never have been allowed to enter the country. Police later confirmed that the suspect wanted in last week’s Brown University shooting was found dead.
It is important to note that under the Diversity Visa Program, around 50,000 people receive US green cards every year through a lottery system. These applicants usually come from countries with lower levels of immigration to the United States. However, even after being selected, applicants must still pass strict background checks and interviews before receiving approval.
