Karachi (24 December 2025): Muslims perform prostration many times during their five daily prayers. Now, modern science is also confirming that this act is beneficial for the human brain.
Muslims have been offering prayers for centuries. However, as scientific research continues to grow, many hidden benefits of Islamic practices are now coming to light.
A recent American pilot study has found that performing prostration, even for a short time, can affect brain activity.
This research was published on PubMed Central (PMC), where scientists examined brain signals using different frequency bands and scientific measurement tools.
The study involved five healthy volunteers — three women and two men. During the experiment, their brain signals were recorded in both open-eye and closed-eye conditions.
All participants met strict health standards. They had no history of mental illness, no head or spinal injuries, were not using neurological medicines, and regularly performed their daily prayers.
According to the findings, female participants showed a decrease in certain brain waves during prostration. This suggests that their brains entered a calmer and more relaxed state. On the other hand, male participants showed an increase in some brain activities during the same posture.
Scientists said that even 10 seconds of prostration can cause noticeable changes in brain function. They also noted that the effects may differ between men and women. These results highlight the physical and mental value of prayer.
In Islam, five daily prayers are mandatory, and a practicing Muslim performs prostration dozens of times a day. While this act is a core part of worship, science is now also recognizing its positive effects on brain health.
