India Approves Controversial Hydropower Project on Chenab River

(December 29, 2025): India has approved a controversial hydropower project on the Chenab River, which will be built in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Indian media, the project is called Dulhasti Stage-II Hydropower Project and is expected to produce up to 260 megawatts of electricity. The total estimated cost of the project is around INR 3,277 crore, and construction work is likely to begin in early 2026. The project will be developed by India’s state-owned company NHPC Limited.

Pakistan has strongly criticized this decision, saying that it is a clear violation of the Indus Waters Treaty. Under this agreement, water from six rivers of the Indus Basin is shared between Pakistan and India. Pakistan has rights over the western rivers — Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab — while India controls the eastern rivers — Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej.

This new approval is being seen in the context of India’s recent decision to keep the Indus Waters Treaty suspended after the Pahalgam incident.

Meanwhile, Sherry Rehman, Vice President of the Pakistan Peoples Party, strongly rejected India’s move. She called the project a serious breach of the treaty and said that it directly targets Pakistan’s recognized water rights.

She stated that India’s unilateral actions go against international laws and global agreements. Sherry Rehman warned that this hydropower project could cause serious risks to Pakistan’s water supply, agriculture, and environmental security. She also said that the project could create strategic and security concerns for Pakistan.

According to her, using water as a political tool can increase tension and instability across South Asia.
