The Punjab government is organizing to launch probability studies for major infrastructure development in Rawalpindi, including a flyover and underpass, a flyover on IJ Principal Road, and underpasses at Chandani Chowk and Marrir Chowk.

In the Annual Development Program for the fiscal year 2025–26, these project are expected to be added. The applications were submitted by local lawmaker, said by the senior official from the Housing and Urban Development Department, including Danyal Chaudhry from NA-57 and Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi from NA-56.

The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has been tasked with formulating the detailed designs and feasibility report. Each project is allocated Rs. 40 million for the initial studies.

The scheduled projects of flyover and underpass include:

  • A single-barrel underpass at Chandani Chowk joining Rawal Road to Murree Road
  • Construction of an underpass at Marrir Chowk
  • A two-lane flyover with a total length from Siddique Chowk to IJ Principal Road.

These plans are designed to generate signal-free corridors and ease growing traffic overcrowding at key connections in Rawalpindi,” said the official. “The Chandani and Marrir Chowk underpasses, in particular, will help lessen travel time, advance safety, and serve as alternative routes to relieve pressure on current roads.”

After ongoing works on The Mall and Adiala Road are completed construction has been started, organization added. Moreover, the government is seeing a flyover or underpass at Kutcheri Chowk, with foundation and feasibility studies already in planning.

The officials highlighted that the projects would not only recover traffic flow but also pay for environmental improvements and encourage local economic activity.

The Punjab government has approved the construction of a flyover and underpass in Rawalpindi to ease traffic congestion. The new substructure will be built at high-traffic zones, aiming to recover daily travel and urban movement. Work is predictable to begin in the coming months.
