Washington (January 15, 2026): Former US President Donald Trump has openly expressed doubt about Reza Pahlavi’s chances of gaining public support in Iran.
In a special interview with Reuters at the Oval Office, Trump questioned whether Reza Pahlavi could truly win the support of people inside Iran. He said that Iran’s religious government could fall, but he was not confident that Pahlavi would be able to succeed.
Trump said that due to protests, the government in Tehran could collapse. He added that any system can fail, and whether the government falls or not, the situation in Iran is entering a very interesting and sensitive phase.
When asked about Reza Pahlavi possibly taking power, Trump said he was unsure whether the Iranian people would accept his leadership. He stated that if Iranians chose Pahlavi, he would have no objection, but he did not know how Pahlavi would perform or whether he would gain enough public trust.
Trump also questioned Pahlavi’s popularity inside Iran. He said that although Pahlavi seems like a good person, it is still unclear whether he can win strong public support within the country.
It is important to note that Reza Pahlavi is the son of Iran’s last Shah, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, who was removed from power after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Reza Pahlavi has been living in exile in the United States. During recent protests in Iran, he has emerged as a leading voice of the Iranian opposition abroad.
Trump further said that Iran has not yet reached a point where any final decision about new leadership can be made. He added that if the Iranian people choose an alternative leadership, the United States would not oppose it. However, he stressed that any decision about Iran’s future leadership must come from within Iran itself.
