Karachi (January 20, 2026): The atmosphere in Karachi remains sorrowful after the tragic incident at Gul Plaza. Rescue teams have recovered 27 bodies from the collapsed building so far, out of which 20 have been identified. Authorities have also reported that 83 people are still missing.
Rescue officials said that human body parts were also found in the debris. According to the Deputy Commissioner South, the identified bodies have been handed over to families, while those that could not be identified were shifted to the Edhi mortuary.
The process of DNA collection has begun to help identify the remaining bodies. So far, families of 18 missing persons have submitted DNA samples. Dozens of people were seen crying at the site, still hoping for a miracle and waiting for news about their loved ones.
Emotional scenes were witnessed when some relatives stood in front of cranes and tried to stop debris removal. They demanded that rescue teams first recover all bodies. Rescue workers then entered Gul Plaza from the back side and continued clearing the rubble using heavy machinery.
Officials also confirmed that two pillars of the building next to Gul Plaza were damaged, creating a risk of partial collapse. Vehicles parked on the roof were being removed as a safety measure. Using cranes, teams removed 17 cars, 12 motorcycles, and one rickshaw. All four generators placed on the roof were also taken down.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab visited the site late at night. While speaking to the media, he said the rescue operation would continue until all missing persons were found. He added that all relevant departments remained fully active at the site.
