Gul Plaza declared unsafe, demolition recommended

Karachi (January 22, 2026): The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) have officially declared Gul Plaza a dangerous structure.

A technical committee formed by SBCA and PEC inspected the building and found it unsafe. After the visit, the committee recommended that Gul Plaza should be demolished after completing the rescue operation. Authorities also inspected nearby buildings to ensure their safety.

According to SBCA officials, Gul Plaza covers an area of 8,124 square yards and consists of around 1,102 shops. Officials confirmed that surrounding plazas were also examined as part of the safety assessment.

It is important to note that a large portion of Gul Plaza collapsed after a massive fire broke out there. Before the incident, the plaza reportedly had more than 1,200 shops.

Earlier, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab visited the CPO Command and Control Center. He stated that attempts to mislead the public would not succeed and that a detailed report would be released soon.

The mayor said that the response time of fire tenders and snorkels at Gul Plaza was carefully reviewed. He added that facts were being twisted to misinform the public, calling it an unfortunate situation.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Murtaza Wahab said that the final report was in its last stages and would be shared with complete evidence. He also confirmed that the report would include full details of the fire brigade’s actions during the incident.
