Cairo (November 28, 2026): Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta has declared the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications for interpreting the Holy Quran as prohibited.
According to Arab media, Egypt’s official religious advisory body issued a fatwa stating that AI tools, including applications like ChatGPT, should not be used for explaining or interpreting the Quran.
The fatwa was issued in response to a question raised by an individual seeking guidance on the matter.
Dar al-Ifta emphasized that relying on AI to understand the Quran could lead to the spread of incorrect information and misleading interpretations. The institution warned that artificial intelligence lacks the depth, understanding, and responsibility required for religious explanations.
The fatwa further stated that religious teachings demand careful and informed understanding, which can only be provided by qualified scholars who possess extensive knowledge and experience in Islamic sciences.
It also stressed that the interpretation of Quranic verses should be taken from authentic Tafseer books, trusted scholars, and recognized religious authorities or institutions. These sources ensure that correct and accurate religious teachings are conveyed to the public.
It is important to note that this fatwa has been issued at a time when educational, religious, and research institutions worldwide are actively debating the benefits and risks of using AI technology in religious education and academic research.
