Pakistan and China Strengthen Economic Ties in High-Level Washington Meeting

A key meeting took place between Pakistan and China during important financial talks in Washington, focusing on economic cooperation and strategic partnership.

According to ARY News, Pakistan’s Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb met with China’s Finance Minister Lan Fo’an and senior officials of the People’s Bank of China during the World Bank and IMF Spring Meetings 2026 in Washington DC.

During the meeting, both sides agreed to further strengthen financial cooperation and expand investment and economic relations between the two countries. Pakistan also thanked China for its long-term and continued support, and appreciated China’s constructive role in the IMF executive board.

The Pakistani finance minister briefed his Chinese counterpart about the progress of Pakistan’s IMF program. He said that a staff-level agreement has been completed for the third review of the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the second review of the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF). Approval is expected in early May.

He also shared that Pakistan has successfully repaid a 1.4 billion dollar Eurobond, and received additional financial support from Saudi Arabia, which has strengthened the country’s external financial position.

The minister further informed about progress on Pakistan’s first Panda Bond, which is part of the strategy to diversify financial resources. He added that a large portion of trade between Pakistan and China is now being settled in Chinese currency, RMB, and therefore expanding the currency swap facility is becoming more important.

Both sides also discussed regional stability and appreciated cooperation in international financial institutions. Pakistan also supported the idea of establishing the SCO Development Bank, especially as it prepares to assume the chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in September.

At the end of the meeting, Pakistan thanked China for its continued support in the IMF and World Bank executive processes.
