Is the Issue Ajrak or the Sindh Government? A Look into the Number Plate Debate

The Sindh government has sped up work on the Safe City Project after rising road accidents and damage to lives and property in the city. The goal is to launch an e-challan system using modern ITS cameras, as Reported By Save Our Pak News Channel on Monday.

Following the orders of Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, IG Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon, DG Safe City Authority Asif Ijaz Sheikh, and DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah are working day and night with their teams to make sure law is followed and people stay safe.

At the same time, the new Ajrak-themed number plates for bikes and cars in Karachi are facing heavy criticism on different platforms, especially from the Urdu-speaking community.

What is Ajrak?

Ajrak is a traditional Sindhi cloth known for its unique patterns and colors. It’s a big part of Sindhi culture and is worn on special occasions. Ajrak has a deep history, going back to the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. Archaeologists have even found cloth pieces like Ajrak in the ruins of Mohenjo-Daro. This shows how old and important Ajrak really is. It’s not just cloth it’s a symbol of Sindhi identity and pride.

Who’s Criticizing It?

Many people are criticizing the Ajrak number plates, including political parties and social media users. Some people are very poor and ask, “Where will we get the money for new number plates?” They say, “If the government already took registration fees once, why are they asking for more?” This shows that for some, it’s a money problem, while others may be using it for political reasons.

Is the Number Plate Rule Only for Karachi?

On Facebook, a man from Karachi shared a video from a hotel in Gambat, showing motorbikes parked outside. He said that in interior Sindh, most bikes don’t even have number plates. In the video, more than 25 bikes were seen and 20 of them had no number plates at all. Some were brand new, some were old. The man criticized this double standard why strict rules in Karachi but not elsewhere? Similar videos are also being shared on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp.

What Should Be Done for Bikes?

In my opinion, the Sindh government should first think about the money issue. After all, every citizen of Sindh is the government’s responsibility. The government should provide a budget to help poor and middle-class people get the new number plates without paying extra.

Ajrak or the Sindh Government What’s the Real Issue?

Politically, we must ask do the political parties have a problem with the Sindh government or just with the Ajrak design? Because on the number plate, there’s also a shining image of Mazar-e-Quaid inside a silver sticker, along with the word “Pakistan.”

In politics, no decision is ever final we’ve heard that since childhood. Even if the government agrees to remove Ajrak, what will happen to the lakhs of number plates already issued? The Sindh government has the right to pass any law through the assembly and make it official.

The e-challan system is a good step by the Sindh government. But if they had discussed the number plate issue with the public and opposition parties from the start, things might have gone more smoothly. Right now, the way both sides are talking in the media makes it seem like they only want attention, while the real issue is something else.

As regular citizens, we should follow traffic rules to protect ourselves and our families. In any decent society, people follow the law. If the Sindh government is doing something good, we should support it. And if there is a problem, it should be solved with understanding. After all, Karachi has already suffered from language and sectarian fights in the past.
