Wedding expenses in Pakistan are about to increase again. In the current financial year, the withholding tax on weddings has gone up by 19%, making marriage ceremonies more expensive than before.
According to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), in the fiscal year 2024–25, the withholding tax collected from weddings increased by 19%. Documents show that the total tax collection from weddings reached 2.02 billion rupees, compared to 1.7 billion rupees in the previous year.
The report also said that this year, the tax collection from weddings increased by 50 crore rupees, and the main reason behind this rise is strict monitoring by FBR.
FBR explained that wedding expenses have especially gone up in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. The department is now collecting taxes from wedding halls, marquees, and hotels where events are held.
Taxes are also being charged in restaurants, clubs, and community centers where people organize wedding functions. The advance tax includes charges for food, decoration, and other event-related services.
According to the official documents, people listed as active taxpayers will have to pay 10% tax, while non-filers will face a higher 20% withholding tax on their wedding events.
The FBR further stated that the tax paid by filers can be adjusted in their annual tax returns. The purpose of this strict wedding tax collection is to regularize the undocumented sectors and make the system more transparent.
