Fake US Secretary of State Used AI to Contact Foreign Ministers and Politicians

A man pretending to be the US Secretary of State contacted foreign ministers from three different countries and also reached out to American politicians using fake voice calls created through AI, as Reported By Save Our Pak News Channel on Wednesday.

According to the global news agency Reuters, a scammer posed as the US Secretary of State and successfully talked to at least three foreign ministers. He also contacted two American politicians one of them a state governor and the other a member of Congress.

Reports say the scammer used AI technology to copy the voice of the real US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. Using this fake voice, he made calls, sent voicemails, and even text messages to different officials.

In the middle of June last month, the scammer used the Signal messaging app to pretend to be Marco Rubio. He reached out to foreign ministers, a governor, and a member of Congress by sending voice messages and texts, and also invited them to talk on Signal.

His goal was likely to use AI-generated text and voice messages to trick the targets and possibly gain access to sensitive information or accounts.

After the incident, the US State Department issued alerts to all its embassies and foreign offices around the world. They also sent warnings about fake accounts and identity scams.

In a public statement, the US State Department said that the aim of this scam could be to steal information or hack into accounts.

The Department also believes that the scammer is linked to a cyber group working under Russian foreign intelligence services. However, they confirmed that there was no direct cyber threat to the US government from this event.

It is still unknown which three countries’ foreign ministers were contacted by the scammer, as the report did not mention any specific names.
