Islamabad (27 September 2025): The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has taken notice of the presence of Shama Junejo sitting behind Defense Minister Khawaja Asif during a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting.
According to details, due to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s busy schedule, Khawaja Asif addressed the UNSC meeting yesterday. During his speech, Shama Junejo was seen sitting right behind him. Her presence sparked criticism on social media, where critics referred to her past statements that allegedly supported recognizing Israel.
After social media criticism, the Foreign Office spokesperson released an official statement on Saturday clarifying the matter.
The spokesperson said that the Ministry had noted questions about a specific person sitting behind the Defense Minister during the recent UNSC session. The statement clarified that the woman’s name was not included in the UN General Assembly’s Certificate of Credentials.
The statement further added that her sitting behind the Defense Minister was not approved by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. She was given the seat without the approval of Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar.
Meanwhile, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif also distanced himself from the controversy. In a post on X, he said:
“Who is this woman, why was she part of our delegation, and why was she sitting behind me? Only the Foreign Office can answer these questions.”
