Four Islamabad High Court judges challenge the 27th Constitutional Amendment in Supreme Court

Islamabad: Four judges of the Islamabad High Court have filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the 27th Constitutional Amendment. However, the court’s diary branch initially raised objections to the application.

According to the details, the judges who submitted the petition include Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, Justice Babar Sattar, Justice Saman Rafat, and Justice Ijaz Ishaq.

The Supreme Court’s diary branch refused to accept the petition at first, saying that the matter falls under constitutional jurisdiction and does not come within the Supreme Court’s immediate scope in the way it was presented.

The petitioning judges said they want the court to review the legal and constitutional aspects of the amendment. They also requested that a date be set soon for the next hearing so the case can move forward.

It is important to remember that only a day earlier, two senior Supreme Court judges — Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Minallah — resigned from their positions after the 27th Amendment became part of the Constitution.

Both judges sent their resignations to President Asif Ali Zardari, stating that the 27th Amendment goes against the Constitution of Pakistan and amounts to a serious attack on judicial independence.
