Citizens from many countries, especially the youth, wish to move to the USA for education, work, and a better future. For these people, an important update has been released by the U.S. Department of State.
According to foreign media, the U.S. Department of State has introduced a $1 registration fee for the Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery program.
Reports say this is the first time that applicants will be charged a $1 fee just to register for the program. This is separate from the $330 fee that will be collected from selected applicants.
The U.S. Department of State announced that the fee will be applied starting October 16, 2025. People registering for the lottery will need to pay this $1 fee through an official government portal while submitting their electronic entry. This fee will not be refundable.
The Diversity Visa Lottery program gives up to 55,000 immigrant visas every year, especially to applicants from countries with low immigration rates to the USA.
Approximately 25 million people worldwide register for the DV Lottery every year. Adding the $1 fee is expected to generate about $25 million annually, which will help cover program operations such as system upgrades, data collection, and security reviews.
The U.S. Department of State said that this new fee may also help reduce fraud by third-party scammers. However, it may slightly reduce overall demand for the lottery, especially from countries with limited resources or weaker economies, as some people may find it difficult to pay even this small fee.
If you plan to register for the 2027 DV Lottery or future Green Card lotteries, make sure to understand the electronic payment process through the official U.S. government payment portal.
