Islamabad police stormed into the Press Club and caused damage inside the building.
According to ARY News, the police mistook journalists for protesters and attacked them. Reporters were also beaten inside the Press Club cafeteria.
PFUJ President Afzal Butt said that police used violence against journalists and staff, broke furniture, and even damaged cameras during the raid.
He explained that normally police wait outside to arrest someone, but when the protesters entered the club, the police also forced their way inside.
Afzal Butt added that even in tough situations, police had never entered the Press Club before. He said that even if there was an FIR against someone, police would not enter the club to arrest them. He called this action unacceptable and said the club management always treated the police well, but this is what they got in return.
The PFUJ President warned that there will be a strong reaction against this behavior of the police.
Secretary of the National Press Club, Nayyar Ali, said that police need permission before entering the Press Club. He added that many protests happen outside, but this time police also attacked the staff inside. He demanded action against those responsible.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi took notice of the unpleasant incident and asked the IG Police for a full report. He also ordered an inquiry into the matter.
The Interior Minister said that violence against journalists will not be tolerated under any circumstances, and strict action will be taken against the officers involved.
