Kuwait Issues Warning Over Rising International Scam Calls

Kuwait’s security authorities have warned citizens and foreign residents about a sharp increase in suspicious international phone calls.

In Kuwait City, officials confirmed that these calls are part of an organized global cyber fraud. According to reports, many people have recently received calls that ring only once and then disconnect quickly.

This type of scam is known worldwide as the “Wangiri scam.” In this method, fraudsters use automated systems to call thousands of numbers. When a person answers or calls back, they are redirected to expensive international numbers, where very high charges are applied per minute without their knowledge.

Scammers often try to keep victims on the line using voice messages or automatic transfers. This can lead to serious financial loss. In some cases, the purpose of these calls is also to record the victim’s voice, which can later be used for other fraud activities, such as fake transactions or approvals.

Sources also revealed that some fraud networks send follow-up text messages with fake links. These messages may claim to be about parcel deliveries, account updates, or important information. Clicking on these links can lead to phone hacking or theft of personal data.

Interestingly, the phone numbers may appear to be from nearby countries, but in reality, they often come from distant regions such as Pacific islands, African countries, or Eastern Europe.

Security officials have strongly advised the public not to answer calls from unknown international numbers, especially if they do not have contacts in those countries. People should ignore one-ring calls, avoid clicking on unknown links, and immediately block suspicious numbers to stay safe.
