A new system has been prepared for buying and supplying electricity to net metering users. Under this new mechanism, electricity purchase and supply will be handled through separate tariffs.
According to the new plan, power companies will buy electricity from net metering users based on the national average energy purchase price per unit. However, when electricity is supplied to these users, it will be provided at the current consumer tariff set by the company.
For net metering users, a new term called “prosumer” has been introduced. NEPRA has officially issued NEPRA Prosumer Regulations 2025 for net metering consumers.
As per the new regulations, no user will be allowed to generate electricity beyond their approved load. NEPRA will also have the authority to review and reassess the electricity generation capacity of net metering users.
The rules further state that separate meters will be installed for buying and selling electricity. In addition, new net metering users will not be allowed to sell their generated electricity to any other consumer.
The new net metering regulations will apply to new users immediately. However, existing net metering consumers will come under these regulations once their current agreements expire.
