New York Announces Cheap Government Grocery Stores for Public Relief

A major announcement has brought good news for people in New York, as the city plans to introduce affordable government-run grocery stores.

On April 13, 2026, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani revealed that the government will open its first public grocery stores. These stores will provide food items directly to citizens at lower prices.

The project will begin at La Marqueta, located under railway tracks in East Harlem. This place is already known as a historic public market. The mayor also shared that similar stores will be opened in every borough of the city.

During a public event, the mayor said these stores will open soon, allowing people to buy essential food at reasonable prices. He also mentioned that free transport will be arranged for citizens to access these stores easily. He added that the city’s emergency and rescue system has already improved, and more promises will be fulfilled.

Reports say that around 30 million dollars will be spent on this project. The main goal is to provide affordable food and reduce the control of private businesses over pricing.

The mayor explained that food prices have increased a lot after the COVID-19 period, especially in recent years. This has created serious pressure on low-income families. Because of this, the new plan is being introduced as a “public option” to balance market prices.

He further said that a total of five government grocery stores will be built across the city. These stores will not only focus on low prices but also aim to create a fair system for food distribution. The stores will be owned and managed directly by the city government.

According to officials, this idea is inspired by older New York public market systems, where goods were sold directly to people without middlemen. The announcement comes at a time when rising food prices have become a major political and economic issue in the city. The government is presenting this as a public relief policy.

However, critics have raised concerns. They say such projects need heavy funding, strong management, and may create competition with private businesses. These concerns still need clear answers.

Meanwhile, US Senator Bernie Sanders praised the move. He said Zohran Mamdani’s actions are a successful example of policies that support the public. He added that many people feel frustrated with democracy because they believe it only benefits the rich.

He said this project proves that governments can work for the people, not just for powerful elites. According to him, such steps can bring new hope for democracy not only in America but around the world.
