Islamabad: Pakistan has offered Bangladesh the use of the Karachi Port Trust for trade purposes.
After 20 years, a new meeting of the Pakistan-Bangladesh Joint Economic Commission was held. It was co-chaired by Petroleum Minister Ali Pervez Malik and Bangladesh’s Finance Adviser Dr. Saleh. Both sides agreed to increase cooperation between their national shipping corporations.
The statement said that through the Karachi Port, Bangladesh will be able to trade with China, Central Asia, and other regional countries.
It was also mentioned that both countries agreed to speed up work on starting direct flights between Pakistan and Bangladesh.
In addition, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Pakistan Halal Authority and Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institute on Halal trade. This MoU will help both countries improve cooperation in setting quality standards and certification for Halal products.
The statement also highlighted that the meeting discussed creating a Pakistan-Bangladesh Knowledge Corridor, which would allow Bangladeshi students to receive 500 new fully funded scholarships.
Under the Pakistan Technical Assistance Program, the number of training seats has been increased from 5 to 25. Both countries agreed to enhance cooperation in trade, investment, industry, energy, climate change, and information technology.
Other areas of cooperation include agriculture, transport, education, banking, health, tourism, media, and the textile sector. Both countries also agreed to work together in the fields of medical and religious tourism.
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervez Malik thanked Bangladesh for its hospitality, saying that the relationship between Pakistan and Bangladesh is based on mutual respect and friendship.
