The government has announced a major increase in the prices of petroleum products due to rising global oil rates caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Petrol and diesel prices have been increased by Rs55 per liter across the country.
Federal ministers shared this update during a press conference in Islamabad. After the increase, the new price of petrol has reached Rs321.17 per liter, while the price of diesel has jumped from Rs275.7 to Rs335.86 per liter.
Following the announcement, the government also issued an official notification confirming the new fuel prices.
During the press conference, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar explained that the situation in the Middle East has pushed global fuel prices higher. He said the crisis started after the attack on Iran, which has created a tense environment in the entire region. According to him, within the last 48 hours, Türkiye and Azerbaijan have also become involved in the conflict, which has further increased pressure on international energy markets.
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said that the government had to make a difficult decision to raise fuel prices. He explained that the government is trying to ensure energy supplies during this challenging period. After the attack on Iran, international petroleum prices rose sharply, leaving the government with very limited options.
The minister also mentioned that some petrol pump owners tried to close their stations in order to make illegal profits. He said the Prime Minister has taken strict notice of this behavior and warned that such actions will not be tolerated.
Ali Pervaiz Malik added that Pakistan is currently facing extraordinary circumstances as the conflict in neighboring regions is expanding. He said it is still unclear how long the crisis will continue or when the situation will improve.
