Possible Pakistan Squad for T20 World Cup Emerges, Former Captain Likely to Miss Out

Lahore (January 23, 2026): The selection of Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup has become a tough task for the selection committee, as names of a possible squad have now surfaced.

The ICC T20 World Cup will begin on February 7 next month and will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. With only two weeks left before the mega event, Pakistan’s final squad has still not been announced.

Although the names of players likely to be included in the squad have emerged, the selection process remains challenging due to form issues and fitness concerns.

The biggest question mark is over the wicketkeeper position. Usman Khan has failed to deliver consistent performances so far, while Khawaja Nafiq has played only one international match, making his selection uncertain.

Former captain Babar Azam’s disappointing performance in the Big Bash League has also created problems for the selectors. His current form does not strongly support his place in the squad.

All-rounder Shadab Khan, who recently returned from injury, showed a decent performance in the Big Bash League. Due to this, his selection for the World Cup is considered almost certain.

Pakistan’s ODI captain and fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi, who suffered a knee injury during the Big Bash League, has now fully recovered after rehabilitation in Lahore. He is expected to be part of the World Cup squad. However, Haris Rauf’s inclusion remains uncertain.

In the fast bowling department, competition is expected between Wasim Junior, Salman Mirza, and Faheem Ashraf. For spin options, Abrar Ahmed, Mohammad Nawaz, and Usman Tariq are under consideration.

The captain and selectors are currently in discussions, and the final World Cup squad is expected to be announced during the upcoming series against Australia.

Meanwhile, sources claim that Mohammad Rizwan and Haris Rauf are not included in the possible T20 World Cup squad.

According to insiders, the likely squad may include captain Salman Ali Agha, Babar Azam, Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Fakhar Zaman, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Nawaz, and Abrar Ahmed.

It is important to note that Pakistan has already announced its squad for the three-match T20 series against Australia. The series will begin on January 29 in Lahore.
