Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a two-week holiday for schools across the country. The decision was made as part of a plan to reduce fuel consumption and manage energy resources more carefully. The government also decided to add an extra weekly holiday to help save petrol.
While addressing the nation, the Prime Minister said that all schools would remain closed for two weeks starting at the end of the current week. At the same time, higher education institutions have been instructed to begin online classes so that students can continue their studies without interruption.
The Prime Minister also revealed several steps aimed at reducing government spending on fuel. For the next two months, petrol usage for government vehicles will be reduced by 50 percent. However, this reduction will not apply to ambulances or public transport buses that are used by the general public.
He further stated that 60 percent of vehicles used by government departments will remain unused for the next two months. In addition, cabinet members, federal ministers, advisers, and special assistants have decided not to receive their salaries during this period. Members of Parliament will also face a 25 percent reduction in their salaries.
According to the Prime Minister, government officers in Grade 20 and above, who earn more than three hundred thousand rupees per month, will have two days’ salary deducted. The collected amount will be used to provide relief to the public.
The government has also decided to cut 20 percent of non-salary expenses in all government departments. Furthermore, a ban has been imposed on the purchase of new vehicles, furniture, air conditioners, and other equipment for government offices.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also announced a ban on foreign visits by federal and provincial ministers, advisers, special assistants, and government officials. Chief ministers and governors will also not be allowed to travel abroad, except for visits that are considered extremely necessary for national interests.
