Sheikh Hasina reacts to her death sentence

New Delhi (17 November 2025): Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid has reacted to the death sentence issued against her, saying that she does not care about it.

After the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh announced the death penalty, Sheikh Hasina said, “The charges are false, and I do not care about such decisions.”

She stated that her government had lost control of the situation at the time, and the events that took place could not be described as a planned attack on citizens.

A special tribunal in Dhaka declared the fugitive leader guilty of crimes against humanity for violently suppressing the student-led protests that took place last year during her government.

In a statement sent to AFP News Agency, Sheikh Hasina called the court’s decision politically motivated. Speaking from India, she said, “The verdicts against me were given by a fake tribunal created by an unelected government, which also runs it. They have no democratic mandate. These decisions are biased and based on political motives.”

The former prime minister further said, “I am not afraid of facing my opponents, as long as there is a proper tribunal where evidence is judged and examined fairly.”
