A scary claim is going viral about the popular Netflix drama series Squid Game. People on social media are saying that its script was inspired by a real-life story from the past, as Reported By Save Our Pak News Channel on Wednesday.
Squid Game is a Korean drama that became very famous on Netflix. In the show, 456 people are invited to join a secret game. They play children’s games to win a huge cash prize, but the twist is if they lose, they face deadly consequences.
In the series, the players go through 6 different traditional games. These include the “Red Light, Green Light” doll game, the honeycomb challenge, marbles, and the glass bridge game.
Whoever loses in any round is killed, and only the last remaining person wins the prize of 45.6 billion Korean won.
This series became popular worldwide. People on social media discussed its story, characters, and deep meaning.
Recently, some TikTok videos claimed that Squid Game was actually based on a true event from the year 1986. These videos say that in a place called “No Man’s Land” (an area that doesn’t belong to any country), a group of people were locked inside an underground bunker and were forced to play deadly games to survive.
Is It Really True?
The truth is, there’s no strong proof that such an event actually happened in 1986. Some believe that “No Man’s Land” might refer to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea. But there’s no record of any such incident in that area.
Some photos shown in those TikTok videos are real, but they don’t prove that Squid Game is based on a true story. Those pictures are actually from a place in South Korea called Brothers Home.
Brothers Home | A Real-Life Horror Story
In the 1980s, the Korean government started a campaign to remove beggars and homeless people from the streets. This was done to make the country look better before the Asian Games and the Seoul Olympics.
The President at that time told the Prime Minister to clear the streets by removing all “wanderers.” So, welfare centers were built where poor and homeless people were taken by force. Thousands of people were locked up in these places.
Inside those centers, many people faced violence, abuse, and even death. Some videos claim that people were kept underground and forced to play deadly games, just like in Squid Game.
Again, there is no solid proof that deadly games actually took place. But one thing is true the people in those centers were treated terribly.
Among all those places, Brothers Home was the most notorious. People there were beaten, starved, and tortured in many ways.
The more people were kept in those centers, the more money the government gave. That’s why even children, workers, and those without ID cards were caught and taken there.
Some reports say prisoners were forced to do hard labor and might have been forced into cruel “games.” That’s why many people think Squid Game may have been inspired by this dark and painful real-life story.
