Sugar Hits Double Century Prices Keep Rising Across Pakistan

The price of sugar in Pakistan keeps going up, and in many cities, it has now reached Rs. 200 per kilogram, as Reported By Save Our Pak News Channel on Saturday.

Even though the government officially allowed the private sector to import 500,000 metric tons of sugar, prices have continued to rise for the sixth week in a row. This week alone, sugar became Rs. 3.52 per kg more expensive. People in Karachi are paying the highest prices, while in other cities, sugar is being sold at rates between Rs. 190 and Rs. 195 per kg.

The Federal Bureau of Statistics has also released its weekly inflation report. It confirms that sugar prices have increased for six straight weeks. The report says that in the past six weeks, sugar has become Rs. 13.77 per kg more expensive.

According to the report, residents of Karachi, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi are buying the most expensive sugar, with rates touching Rs. 200 per kg.

The report also mentions prices in other cities:

  • Larkana: Rs. 195
  • Lahore and Sialkot: Rs. 192
  • Gujranwala, Multan, Hyderabad, and Peshawar: Rs. 190
  • Quetta and Khuzdar: Rs. 188
  • Faisalabad, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, and Bannu: Rs. 185
  • Sukkur: Rs. 180

The statistics report also says that prices of 19 items have gone up in just one week. These include broiler chicken, milk, yogurt, rice, and many vegetables.

In just one week:

  • Broiler chicken increased by Rs. 78.32 per kg
  • Yogurt, milk, daal mash, masoor, and chana also became more expensive
  • Basmati rice went up by Rs. 1.72 per kg, and eggs by Rs. 1.85 per dozen

Vegetables also saw a price increase:

  • Tomatoes: Rs. 10.56
  • Onions: Rs. 3.34
  • Potatoes: Rs. 2.29
  • Garlic: Rs. 8.44

However, prices of 6 items dropped during the week. The price of LPG gas went down, and the home cylinder became Rs. 82.98 cheaper. Prices of moong daal, flour bags, and ghee also decreased. Prices of 26 items remained the same.

It’s worth noting that after officially approving sugar imports, the federal government is now actively working to bring down the price of imported sugar and make it more affordable for the public.
