Supreme Court allows Barrister Salman Safdar to meet PTI founder

Islamabad: The Supreme Court has allowed Barrister Salman Safdar to meet the PTI founder in jail and directed him to submit a written report on his condition.

According to details, the Supreme Court appointed Barrister Salman Safdar as a Friend of the Court and permitted him to meet the PTI founder in Adiala Jail. The court also assigned him the role of a judicial representative and commission.

The court ordered Barrister Salman Safdar to visit Adiala Jail and submit a detailed written report about the PTI founder’s current condition, available facilities, and overall living conditions inside the jail.

The Chief Justice clearly instructed that Barrister Salman Safdar should not be made to wait outside the jail and that no obstacles should be created during the meeting. If any issue arises, he was told to immediately contact the Chief Justice’s personal staff officer.

The court further directed Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan to ensure full implementation of the Supreme Court’s order and to arrange proper timing for the meeting.

The Chief Justice also stated that the court’s earlier order dated August 24, 2023—regarding providing facilities to the PTI founder in jail—must be fully followed.

During the hearing, the Attorney General presented a report covering the period from August 5 to August 18, 2023, related to the PTI founder’s detention in Attock Jail. The court then sought an updated report from the jail superintendent regarding his current condition.

Barrister Salman Safdar informed the court that after an eye examination, there were some health concerns regarding the PTI founder. In response, the Chief Justice directed that the report on living conditions be submitted in chambers.

Chief Justice Yahya Afridi stated that the court would review the report and announce a decision on the case the day after tomorrow. He emphasized that the court’s assistance was needed to ensure a timely decision.

The hearing was conducted by a bench comprising Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan. However, the bench, led by the Chief Justice of Pakistan, postponed the hearing on petitions related to the trial of the PTI founder in the Toshakhana criminal case until February 12.
