Lahore: After a disappointing performance in the World Cup, discussions are spreading that Salman Ali Agha may be removed from captaincy and Shadab Khan could be appointed as the new T20 captain. Former fast bowler Mohammad Amir and ex-batsman Ahmed Shehzad have now shared their opinions on these reports.
Speaking on a private TV channel program, Mohammad Amir questioned the idea that head coach Mike Hesson would promise Shadab a direct return to the team once he recovered from injury. Amir said such decisions were likely made earlier and not recently.
He explained that during the PSL season, it was already decided who would become coach, while Shadab was still injured at that time. Amir added that Hesson was new back then, so it raises the question of who had the authority to ensure Shadab’s automatic return to the squad. According to him, these decisions appear to have been finalized long ago.
Ahmed Shehzad agreed with Amir’s views. He said that once management makes a decision, they usually need trusted people to implement it. Shehzad suggested that if Shadab is being prepared for captaincy, then the plan has likely been in motion for some time.
He further claimed that Salman Ali Agha might be removed after the World Cup and Shadab Khan could officially take over as captain.
It is important to note that during ARY News’ World Cup special program “Har Lamha Purjosh,” host and former national captain Shoaib Malik also mentioned Shadab Khan’s name as a strong candidate for T20 captaincy. Malik said that the management had earlier considered making Shadab captain, but his injury delayed the move.
Shoaib Malik also commented that it seems some PSL-style influence, particularly from Islamabad United, may be visible within the national team setup. He added that the team currently lacks a reliable middle-order batsman.
