US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping had a phone conversation where TikTok and the US-China trade agenda were the main topics discussed.
According to Chinese state media, the two leaders spoke over the phone to talk about TikTok, which is owned by China, and the efforts to reduce trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
They discussed the details of the agreement to allow TikTok to continue operating in the US while also working to ease tensions between the two countries.
The US Treasury Secretary has reached a framework agreement regarding the ownership of TikTok.
This could reduce the chances of escalation in the ongoing trade war between the US and China. On September 15, a framework deal was made to bring TikTok under American control.
According to US media reports, up to 80% of TikTok will be under the control of American buyers.
The last phone call between the two leaders also focused on trade relations and took place in early June. This was the first telephone contact with the Chinese president after Trump returned to the White House in January.
A few days later, senior US and Chinese officials followed up with a meeting in London. There, they agreed on a framework to reduce trade tensions. This included extending lower tariff rates between the two countries and restarting the flow of rare earth minerals from China to American companies.
