White House Secretly Warned Iran Before Hormuz Operation, Axios Claims

Washington (May 06, 2026): American media outlet Axios has claimed that the White House secretly warned Iran not to interfere in the Strait of Hormuz operation.

According to reports, a senior official from the Trump Administration informed Iran on Sunday about the planned American operation in the Strait of Hormuz. The mission aimed to guide ships safely through the route, and Tehran was warned not to create obstacles.

On Tuesday, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine described the Iranian attacks as limited and said the ceasefire was still holding. However, some American and Israeli officials believe that if diplomatic talks continue to fail, President Donald Trump could order military action again later this week.

Reports say the warning related to “Project Freedom” was delivered on Sunday. On the same day, Trump also posted a message on Truth Social. Pete Hegseth later stated that the United States is in contact with Iran through both public and private channels to keep the defensive operation active for global benefit.

During the first day of the operation on Monday, Iran reportedly targeted American warships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, along with commercial vessels in the region and some targets in the United Arab Emirates. General Dan Caine said the attacks were “below the level” that would restart a major war.

Hegseth explained that some tension was expected in the beginning. He added that certain actions by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards may not always match the wishes of Iranian negotiators, and controlling such actions is important to move toward an agreement.

Both Hegseth and Caine said the US military is fully prepared to restart military operations immediately if ordered by President Trump.

Reports also showed that during the first 24 hours of the operation, there was no major increase in oil and cargo shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. According to US Central Command, only two American-flagged ships passed through the route on Monday, while none crossed on Tuesday.

Hegseth claimed that hundreds of ships are still waiting in line, but many shipping companies are not fully confident in the current security situation. He urged Iran to act carefully and avoid further escalation.

No new Iranian attacks were reported on Tuesday. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Iran’s response on Monday had created a “new balance” in the region.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that talks with the United States, with mediation from Pakistan, were “making progress.” He also warned the US administration not to fall into another crisis because of negative influences.

Meanwhile, the UAE Ministry of Defense claimed that Iran launched another missile and drone attack on Tuesday, but the country’s defense systems successfully responded to it.
